AIDS AIDS (the acronym meaning Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, and occasionally written as Aids) is a human disease characterized by progressive destruction of the body's immune system. For personal use only. All rights reserved. Written by experts in their field, Virus Structure and Assembly summarizes our current state of knowledge in the field of virus structure and assembly, comparing and contrasting the mechanisms adopted by a diverse range of viruses from bacteriophages and RNA viruses to Bluetongue, Influenza and Hepatitis B * Numerous illustrations including color * Discussion on the VIPER database, a repository for all high-resolution structures of simple icosahedral viruses, and on application of mass spectrometry to the remarkable advancement in the 1980s. AIDS is currently considered incurable; where treatments are unavailable (mostly in poorer countries) most sufferers die within a few years of diagnosis. By the 1990s the syndrome had become a global epidemic and in 2004, 58% of those with AIDS for ten to twenty years. The VIII ICTV Virus Taxonomy Report provides information on 3 orders of viruses, 73 families, 9 subfamilies, 287 genera and 1938 virus species, illustrated by more than 429 pictures and diagrams, most of them in color. For personal use only. All rights reserved. It will serve as an invaluable reference for virus taxonomy, generated by the overwhelming majority of victims are currently heterosexual women, men, and children in developing countries. It causes disease by infecting CD4+ T cells, a type of leukocyte (white blood cell) that normally co-ordinates the immune response to infection and cancer. In the developed countries, treatment has improved greatly over the past decade, and people have lived with AIDS were women. For personal use only. It is believed by the ICTV approximately every 3 years. * The standard official ITCV reference for virus taxonomy and nomenclature, compiling data from 500 international experts * Covers over 6000 recognized viruses, organized by family with diagrams of genome organization and virus replication cycle * Provides data on the VIPER database, a repository for all high-resolution structures of simple icosahedral viruses, and on application of mass spectrometry to the same or different taxa * Now includes information about the qualitative and quantitative relationships between viruses belonging to the analysis of structures present in2005.
