Herpes Virus 1

Herpes virus - In colloquial use, herpes virus refers to the herpes simplex virus, particularly when transmitted sexually. In scientific use, herpesvirus (without the space) refers to a virus of the taxonomic family herpesviridae.

Herpes simplex virus - The herpes simplex virus (HSV) is a virus that manifests itself in two common viral infections, each marked by painful, watery blisters in the skin or mucous membranes (such as the mouth or lips) or on the genitals. The disease is contagious, particularly during an outbreak, and is incurable.

Herpetic whitlow - A herpetic whitlow is a lesion on a finger or thumb caused by the herpes simplex virus. In children the primary source of infection is the orofacial area, and it is commonly inferred that the virus (in this case commonly HSV-1) is transferred by the chewing or sucking of fingers or thumbs.

Epstein-Barr virus - The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), also called Human herpesvirus 4 (HHV-4), is a virus of the herpes family (which includes Herpes simplex virus and Cytomegalovirus), and is one of the most common viruses in humans. Most people become infected with EBV, which is usually asymptomatic.
